In cases like this I prefer to use some meth blue over salt, just as a preventative and to ease respiration a bit, possible buying the fish a little more time to recover on its own. I am a salt skeptic myself........

I think putting some salt is great idea I would also add some extra air to the tank as well. I have had much better results using Marine salt but you would probably disagree with me. Just let him rest and give him clean water, air and salt and just wait it out .............Josie

Gee, sorry to hear this Liz.  How big is the fish and how big is your siphon tube?  I sucked up a 2" juvie with my 2" gravel wash tube but saw it in time and I shook it out of the tube back into the tank.  Your fish may make it, remember how tough these fish are if they are in otherwise good condition before their accident. Salt sounds good to me, sure can't hurt.  Gary, too bad about your losses, what a week huh?  At least the culprit paid the ultimate price.  Good luck to both of you!

Sorry Gary.  Mine is a good fish, not a great fish.  I've done all I can.  Whether it lives or dies is up to it.  It will die.  If it decides not to die I will be beside myself.

This is why I breed fish rather than mammals.  With a fish, it's just a fish.

It's been a bad month for me..I heard the same thing four different times in my domestic adult tank..result; 4 dead wonderful large Discus, one at a time..finally watched the tank in the dark..A crummy small male rose red was ninja attacking the others in their sleep, biting them who knows where, and they smacked into the tank sides..Last one was three days ago, a large blue male...offender in now culled, but too late...this last one hung in for 3 days on it's side, then croaked..

Since nobody has been forthcoming, I decided decided to add the salt.  I generally use any old salt.  I used Kosher this time because the fish is on the bottom on it's side and idoine would only add to it's distress..  It'll be dead by morning.  Ain't no harm in trying, though.

I was doing WC last evening and felt a big "thunk" through the siphon hose.  After I refilled the tanks I saw one of my discus in the "thunk" tank dark and laying on his side.  He had no marks on him but he must have been the cause of the "thunk".

I thought that by morning he would be dead.  I thought that he was dead this morning, but when I went to scoop him out he was still alive.  I thought for sure that he would be dead by this evening.  He's still not dead.

I'm going to move him to a 10 gallon with lots or aeration.  I am debating whether adding a tablespoon of salt might help him with osmo-regulation.

Since I've decided that I might could save him, any other suggestions would be welcome.  He'll still likely be dead by morning.
